It takes a Village to produce a race such as the Lavaman and without the support of the Big Island Community it would not be possible. Lavaman believes strongly in supporting and giving back to the community that supports it and each year through our fundraisers, sponsors, athletes and the race itself we give back about $50,000 in donations and grants. In addition the non-profit arm of the Lavaman is LavaKids and through this program we not only develop our own programs which promote healthy and active lifestyles for the youth of the Big Island, but we also provide donations to many groups with similar goals and objectives. Among the organizations that Lavaman has supported are:
Hospice of Kona… Hospice of Kona’s family-centered approach to end-of-life care provides warmth & compassion and that needed personal touch. Based in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii (also known as “The Healing Island”), Hospice of Kona focuses on the whole person, and believes life should be celebrated with the highest quality of compassionate care. Special Olympics West Hawaii is FREE to all our Athletes, Coaches, Unified Partners and families. Due to this aspect of our program, a volunteer committee is a must to raise all the funds needed for our West Hawaii program. Our largest expense is outer island competition. We travel 3 times per year for State Games in Oahu, we average around 70 participants flying over to compete in sports of Track and Field, Swimming, Soccer, Powerlifting, Bocce Ball, Basketball, Softball and Bowling. Special Olympics West Hawaii is funded solely on fundraisers and individual donations, and a County grant that has been scaled back tremendously. The need for Special Olympics West Hawaii programs to continue here on this island is extremely necessary. There is no other program in our Area to provide athletic services to our Athletes with intellectual disabilities. LAVAMAN, we sincerely thank you for your kindness and support of Special Olympics West Hawaii.  Click for more…
